LIB Cell Casing

LIB Cell Casing

Lithium battery cell casing is the outer protective enclosure that houses the electrochemical components of a lithium cell — including the anode, cathode, separator, and electrolyte.

Purpose and Function

The casing provides:

  • Mechanical protection against shocks, vibrations, and external impacts
  • Electrical insulation to prevent short circuits
  • Thermal stability to withstand temperature changes during charging/discharging
  • Containment of gases and electrolyte to prevent leakage or explosion

Types of Cell Casings

Depending on the cell format, casings vary in material and structure:

  • Cylindrical Cells: Made from nickel-plated steel or aluminum (e.g., 18650, 21700 cells)
  • Prismatic Cells: Use aluminum or stainless-steel cans with welded or sealed tops
  • Pouch Cells: Use laminated aluminum–polymer films, which are lightweight and flexible

Key Properties

  • Corrosion-resistant
  • Lightweight but strong
  • Sealable (laser welding, crimping, or heat sealing)
  • Compatible with electrolyte chemistry
